Janai Purnima at Gosaikunda

जनै पूर्णिमा

On the full moon of Shrawan, thousands of Hindu pilgrims and shamans climb to Gosaikunda at 4,380 m to bathe in the lake Shiva is said to have made with his trident. It is the one night of the year when the lakeshore is crowded.

Janai Purnima is the day Brahmin and Chhetri men change the sacred thread (janai) they wear across the chest, and when everyone, of any caste, ties a yellow or red protective thread (doro) on the wrist. Across Nepal it is a household and temple festival. At Gosaikunda it becomes a mountain pilgrimage. Families walk up from Dhunche over two or three days, sleep in lodges, tents and stone shelters around the lake, and go down to the water at dawn on the full moon to bathe and offer flowers and coins at the Shiva shrine on the shore.

The lake draws pilgrims because of the story of the Samudra Manthan, the churning of the ocean. When Shiva drank the poison that rose from the churning, his throat burned, and he struck his trident into the mountain to bring out cold water. Gosaikunda is that water. Many pilgrims believe the lake is linked underground with the pond at the Kumbheshwar temple in Patan, so people who cannot make the climb bathe there on the same day.

The festival is also a gathering of dhami and jhankri, the shamans of the Tamang and other hill communities, who come in feathered headdresses with drums and bells and dance through the night around the lake. For a traveller this is the most striking part. Remember that this is worship, not a show, and that the trail is in monsoon: slippery, leech-ridden below 3,000 m and often in cloud. Dates follow the lunar calendar, so check current status before you travel.

Tips

  • Start from Dhunche at least three days before the full moon and plan a night at Laurebina to acclimatise.
  • Lodges around the lake fill completely; carry a sleeping bag rated to minus 5 °C even if you have a booking.
  • Ask before photographing shamans or people bathing, and keep flash off at night.

Questions

When is Janai Purnima at Gosaikunda?

It falls on the full moon of the Nepali month of Shrawan, which usually lands in August and occasionally late July. The exact date changes every year with the lunar calendar. Pilgrims arrive at the lake the evening before and bathe at dawn on the full-moon day. Check the official Nepali calendar and the current trail and road status before you travel.

Can foreigners join the Janai Purnima pilgrimage to Gosaikunda?

Yes. Foreign travellers walk the same trail from Dhunche with pilgrims, but they still need a Langtang National Park permit and, under the rule in force since April 2023, a licensed guide; check current status before you travel. Be respectful at the shore: bathing and offerings are religious acts, and the best places at the water belong to the people praying.

Is it safe to trek to Gosaikunda in August?

It is possible but harder than in autumn. August is monsoon: daily rain, cloud, leeches below about 3,000 m and landslide risk on the road to Dhunche. The lake area itself is cold, around 0 to 8 °C at night. Go with a guide who has done the festival walk before, allow a spare day, and check current road and trail status before you travel.

What do the shamans do at Gosaikunda during Janai Purnima?

Dhami and jhankri, the traditional healers of the Tamang and other hill communities, come to the lake to renew their power. They dance through the night in long white skirts and feather headdresses, beating drums and shaking bells, and many bathe in the lake at dawn. Some are accompanied by apprentices. Watch from a distance and ask before taking any photograph.
