Jeep drive in the park's quieter centre
Starting from the Kasara side, jeeps explore the central grasslands, lakes and sal forest with fewer vehicles than the Sauraha tracks. Good odds for rhino, gaur and sambar, and a fair chance of sloth bear.

Lodges at Patihani run drives into the central part of the park, crossing near Kasara and heading into grassland and sal forest. Fewer jeeps use these tracks, so animals are often calmer and you can sit for longer at a lake edge or a clearing without another vehicle pulling up behind. Expect a cold, misty start in December and January.
Gaur, the world's largest wild cattle, spend much of the year in the Churia hills to the south and come down to the grasslands in spring when new grass sprouts after the fires. Chitwan's gaur population roughly doubled between 1997 and 2016, and February to April is the best time to see a herd. Watch for them in open areas near the forest edge.
Expect rhinos in the wet grassland, spotted deer in large herds, sambar near water, and many birds of prey. Sloth bears are seen on some early drives, often digging at termite mounds. Bring a jacket for the cold start in winter and a hat for the ride back. Drives last four to five hours; bring snacks and water.

Questions
Is the Kasara side of Chitwan better than Sauraha for wildlife?
Not better in species, but usually quieter. The central tracks around Kasara see fewer jeeps than the routes nearest Sauraha, so animals are often more relaxed and you share sightings with fewer vehicles. The wildlife is the same park population; skilled guides and early starts matter more than which side you enter from.
When are gaur easiest to see in Chitwan?
From about February to April. After the dry-season fires, fresh grass sprouts on the floodplain and gaur come down from the Churia hills to graze and browse in the grasslands and riverine forest. For most of the year they stay in the less accessible hills in the south of the park.
Can I book a private jeep from Patihani?
Yes. Lodges at Patihani, including Kasara Resort, arrange private jeeps with licensed nature guides and park permits. Book the evening before so permits are ready. Rates are higher than shared jeeps from Sauraha but you control the start time and pace.
