Jeep safari in west Chitwan's grassland
Cross the Rapti from Meghauli into the park's western floodplain, a mix of tall grass, riverine forest and small lakes that is excellent for rhino and good for tiger, with far fewer vehicles than the Sauraha side.

Meghauli's lodges run their own jeeps with experienced naturalists. After crossing the Rapti you are straight into the floodplain grassland, with views over cut grass in February and March and channels lined with kapok and rosewood. Rhinos are seen on almost every dry-season drive. Drives leave at dawn, when animals are most active, and return before the midday heat.
This western sector is well known for tigers, which move along the river corridors and grassland edges. Sightings are never guaranteed, but early starts and patient waiting at water points improve the odds. Leopards, sloth bears and jungle cats are seen on some drives, along with hog deer and spotted deer. Patience at water points pays off.
A full-day drive allows time at watchtowers and lakes, a packed lunch in the forest and a slow return in the afternoon light. Dust can be heavy in April, so bring a scarf and protect camera gear. Your lodge arranges the park permit and guides. Full days are long, so bring snacks and a hat.

Questions
Is tiger spotting better in Meghauli than in Sauraha?
The western floodplain around Meghauli has good tiger habitat and fewer vehicles, which helps. Many of our guests have their best sightings from this side. Still, tigers are shy everywhere in Chitwan and no lodge can promise one. Time is the main factor: two full days give better odds than one.
What animals will I see in west Chitwan?
Expect rhinos, spotted deer, hog deer, wild boar, langur and macaque monkeys, mugger crocodiles and many birds. With luck you may see gaur, sloth bear, leopard or tiger. In winter, migrant waterbirds and raptors add variety along the rivers and lakes.
Are the jeep safaris included at Meghauli lodges?
At most Meghauli lodges, safari activities are sold as part of a full-board package that includes jeep drives, guides and other activities, with park entry fees sometimes added separately. Check what your package includes before you book, especially private versus shared jeeps.
