Jeep safari in Chitwan National Park
Open jeeps cross the Rapti and drive the park's forest tracks, grasslands and oxbow lakes with a licensed nature guide. Half-day trips stay near Sauraha; full-day trips reach Kasara and the gharial breeding centre. Book through your lodge.

Jeeps from Sauraha either cross the Rapti on a ferry or enter by road through the buffer zone, depending on season and route. Each vehicle carries a driver, a nature guide and up to about eight guests. Tracks run through sal forest, along the edges of tall grasslands and past small lakes where rhinos wallow and gaur come to drink. Most drives leave at dawn or in the mid-afternoon.
On a typical half day you can expect rhinos, spotted deer, hog deer, wild boar, rhesus macaques and grey langurs, plus peafowl, hornbills and many raptors. Sloth bears, leopards and tigers are present and seen on some trips, never on demand. Watchtowers along the route let you climb above the grass and scan quietly. Good guides stop for birds as readily as for mammals.
Full-day drives continue west to Kasara, the park headquarters, where you visit the gharial breeding centre and the small museum before returning by a different track. Bring a packed lunch, water, a hat and a scarf against dust. The months after the grass is cut in January and February give the clearest views. Lodges can arrange a picnic lunch.

Questions
Half-day or full-day jeep safari in Chitwan: which is better?
A half day of about four hours suits most first-time visitors and families and covers good rhino country near Sauraha. A full day of about eight hours goes deeper into the park, includes Kasara and the gharial centre, and gives better odds for rarer animals such as sloth bears and leopards. It is long and dusty, so choose it if you love wildlife.
Will I see a tiger on a Chitwan jeep safari?
Possibly, but do not plan around it. Chitwan has a healthy tiger population, yet they are shy and spend the day in dense cover. Sightings are most likely from March to May, when water is scarce and grass is low. Rhinos, deer, crocodiles and many birds are seen on almost every trip in the dry season.
Are jeep safaris shared or private?
Both are available. Shared jeeps are cheaper and run on fixed times from Sauraha. A private jeep costs more but lets you set the pace, stop longer for birds and photographs, and leave earlier. We book private jeeps for most of our guests. Park entry fees and guide fees are added on top of the jeep cost.
