Climb Chhukung Ri at dawn
Leave Chhukung before dawn for the summit of Chhukung Ri, about 5,550 m, a steep trekking peak with a close-up view of Lhotse's south face, Makalu, Island Peak, Ama Dablam and the Imja lake. A demanding but non-technical climb.

Chhukung Ri rises directly above the village, a grassy then rocky ridge leading to a rounded top and a slightly higher rocky summit. The trail climbs steeply over loose ground, gaining about 800 m to the summit, and most people take 3–4 hours up. The final stretch involves easy scrambling over rocks; your guide will judge whether the true summit or the lower top is the right goal for you.
The view is the reason to go. Lhotse's south face, more than 3 km high, fills the northern sky, joined by the long ridge of Nuptse. East lie Makalu and Baruntse; south, Ama Dablam's north-east face; below, the Imja glacier, Island Peak and the grey-green Imja Tsho. Few viewpoints on the Everest trail put you this close to such a wall.
Start early, ideally before 5 am, with headlamp, water, snacks and every warm layer. Wind picks up by late morning and cloud often builds. Descend the way you came, carefully on the loose sections; trekking poles help. Climbing Chhukung Ri is superb acclimatisation for Kala Patthar and the high passes, but only if you are already well adjusted in Dingboche.

Questions
How high is Chhukung Ri?
Chhukung Ri is about 5,550 m, roughly 800 m above Chhukung village. Many trekkers stop at a lower top on the ridge, a little below the summit, where the view is almost as good. Either way it is one of the higher non-technical viewpoints in Khumbu, higher than Kala Patthar.
Is Chhukung Ri harder than Kala Patthar?
Slightly. It is steeper, with a rocky final section involving easy scrambling, and it gains more height from the village. Kala Patthar is a steady, sandy climb from Gorak Shep. Both are non-technical but serious because of altitude. Chhukung Ri is excellent acclimatisation before Kala Patthar.
What can I see from Chhukung Ri?
Lhotse's huge south face and the Nuptse ridge to the north, Makalu and Baruntse to the east, Ama Dablam's north-east face to the south, and below you the Imja glacier, Island Peak and Imja Tsho. Everest itself is hidden behind the Lhotse–Nuptse wall from here.
