Most pilgrims camp at Triveni Dham the night before and begin the last climb in the dark. The trail rises steeply over grass and rock, and at this altitude every step is slow. Groups of villagers pass you singing, carrying offerings of flowers, coconuts and red cloth.

As you near the ridge the temple appears, small and plain, with bells and flags. Inside is the image of the goddess; the priests of Kalikot and Bajura receive offerings and give tika. From the top the view opens in every direction across the hills of Bajura, Achham, Kalikot and Jumla, with snow peaks to the north on clear mornings.

Take your time, drink water and turn back if you feel the signs of altitude sickness: severe headache, nausea or confusion. Bring warm layers, a hat and gloves. After paying your respects, descend to Triveni for a hot meal.

Questions

How high is Badimalika temple?

Badimalika temple stands at about 4,220 m on a ridge in Triveni municipality, Bajura. That is higher than Everest's Namche Bazaar, so altitude sickness is a real risk. Acclimatise on the way up and do not rush the final climb.

How hard is the climb to Badimalika temple?

The final ascent from Triveni is steep and takes several hours at altitude. The whole trek from Martadi takes three to four days over unmarked trails with few facilities. It is a challenging trek suitable for fit walkers with some Himalayan experience.

Can non-Hindus visit Badimalika temple?

Respectful visitors are generally welcome at the temple area. Remove your shoes, follow the priests' guidance, do not enter restricted parts and ask before photographing rituals or people. During the fair, keep out of the way of pilgrims making offerings.
