Walking the high patans of Khaptad
Spend a full day walking between Khaptad's famous meadows on wide grassy trails, through fir and rhododendron forest, with views over the far western hills and, on clear days, the snow peaks of Saipal.

Khaptad's twenty-two patans are the soul of the park. They roll over the plateau at around 3,000 m, open grassland separated by belts of fir, oak, hemlock and rhododendron. The walking is gentle by Himalayan standards, along wide trails with few steep climbs, so you can look around instead of at your feet.
In spring the rhododendrons flower red and pink along the forest edges. In the monsoon months the meadows are covered in wildflowers and herbs, many used in local medicine. Autumn brings golden grass and the clearest views, south over the folded hills of Doti and Achham and north to Saipal.
Your guide will plan a loop that links several patans with the lake and shrines. Carry water, lunch, a rain jacket and a warm layer, and watch for danphe pheasants, langur monkeys and, very rarely, a musk deer at the forest edge.

Questions
How many meadows are there in Khaptad?
Local people and park literature speak of twenty-two patans, or high meadows, across the Khaptad plateau. They vary from small clearings to wide grasslands. A full day of walking links several of them; seeing them all takes several days.
When do flowers bloom in Khaptad?
Rhododendrons flower in spring, from late March to May. The meadows are at their most colourful in the monsoon, from July to early September, with many wildflowers and herbs. Autumn has fewer flowers but clearer skies.
Is walking in Khaptad difficult?
On the plateau, no. The trails are wide and gentle at around 3,000 m. The hard part is the approach, a climb of several hours from the trailhead. Anyone fit enough for a long hill walk will enjoy the meadows.
