Sunrise over Rara from Murma Top
Climb in the dark to Murma, a 3,630 m viewpoint above Rara, to watch the sun light up the lake and the snow peaks on the northern skyline. The picture of Rara that most Nepalis know.

Murma is the high point on the ridge above the lake, at 3,630 m. The climb from the lakeshore lodges gains about 640 m on forest and meadow trails, and most people take two to three hours up, starting by headtorch to reach the top just before sunrise.
From the top you see the whole of Rara spread below, often with a band of mist lying on the water, and on clear mornings a long line of snow peaks to the north and west across Mugu and Humla. As the sun rises the lake changes from slate to silver to deep blue. It is cold, often below freezing, until the sun warms the ridge.
Carry a down jacket, gloves, a hat, a thermos of tea and some breakfast. A guide is essential in the dark; the trails branch through the forest. Come back down by mid-morning for a late breakfast at your lodge.

Questions
How high is Murma Top?
Murma is about 3,630 m, roughly 640 m above Rara Lake. The climb takes two to three hours from the lakeshore, and the descent about one and a half. It is the best viewpoint for seeing the whole lake with mountains behind.
Do I need a guide for Murma Top?
Yes. Under current rules foreign trekkers in national parks need a licensed guide, and in the dark the forest trails are easy to lose. Your guide will also judge the weather and choose the right path. Check current status before you travel.
Is Murma Top worth climbing if it is cloudy?
On cloudy mornings the mountain views may be hidden, but the lake often shows through gaps and mist can make it very atmospheric. If the forecast is poor, your guide may suggest waiting a day. In October and November clear mornings are common.
