Changu village, its museums and tea shops
Explore the short cobbled street below the temple: rebuilt brick houses, small family-run museums of farming tools, coins and household objects, thangka studios, and tea shops with views over the valley. Gentle and unhurried.

Changu village is a single main street of brick houses climbing to the temple, with lanes and courtyards branching off. Much of it was badly damaged in 2015, and many houses have been rebuilt with traditional brick and carved windows. Walking up slowly, you see the mix of old and new, and families back in their homes.
Small museums run by local families display everyday objects from Newar life: farming tools, kitchen pots, old coins, jewellery and ritual items. They are modest but give a good sense of how people lived here before roads arrived. Fees are small and go to the families.
Along the street, thangka painters and mask makers work in small studios, and tea shops offer seats with views over the terraced hills. We end with milk tea and gwaramari or a plate of beaten rice and pickles, before visiting the temple or heading down to Bhaktapur.
