Tamang Selo songs and damphu drums
An evening of Tamang Selo, the call-and-answer songs of the Tamang, played on the round damphu drum by villagers in traditional dress, often with dancing in which guests are invited to join. Bring warm clothes for an outdoor evening.

Tamang Selo is the folk music of the Tamang people: songs sung in turn by men and women, often teasing, sometimes sad, about love, work, the hills and the road. The rhythm comes from the damphu, a round frame drum played with the hand. It is heard at weddings, festivals and village gatherings across the Tamang hills. The songs often include clever exchanges between singers, with one side challenging and the other replying. Good singers are admired for wit as much as for voice. Many Tamang Selo songs have become popular across Nepal through radio and recordings.
In Gatlang we arrange an evening with a group of villagers, often through the homestay committee or a women's group. They perform in a courtyard or community hall, wearing traditional dress, with songs and dances that change with the season and the occasion. Your guide explains the lyrics as they go. Performers usually wear traditional Tamang dress: for women, long skirts, bright blouses, shawls and silver or coral jewellery; for men, white shirts, waistcoats and caps. Ask before taking close-up photographs of individuals, and avoid flash in their faces.
By the end, guests are usually pulled into a line dance. The fee goes to the performers and their group. It is a performance, but it is rooted in how the village actually celebrates, especially at Sonam Lhosar. In the right season, a homestay host may invite you to a real wedding or celebration instead, which is even better. Either way, the music is a reminder that Tamang culture is lived, not staged, and that Gatlang's people are proud to share it with visitors.

Questions
What is Tamang Selo?
Tamang Selo is a genre of Tamang folk song, usually sung in alternating verses by men and women to the rhythm of the damphu drum. It is performed at weddings, festivals such as Sonam Lhosar and social gatherings, and has become well known across Nepal through recordings and radio.
Can I take photos and video during the Tamang Selo performance?
Usually yes, since it is arranged for guests, but ask the group first and avoid flash in faces. If you are invited to a real wedding or festival rather than an arranged evening, always check with your host before filming.
Should I tip the performers?
The performance fee is included when we arrange it, and goes to the group. A small additional tip to the group leader at the end is welcome but not required. Do not give money to individual children performing; give it to the group or the organiser.
