Start the Tamang Heritage Trail

From the Syabrubesi area a lower trek loops west and north through Tamang villages: Gatlang with its stone houses, the hot springs of Tatopani, Thuman and the homestays of Briddim. Altitudes stay mostly between 1,500 and 3,200 m.

The Tamang Heritage Trail was developed as a community-based route so that villages away from the main Langtang trail could earn from tourism. It takes you through Tamang settlements where houses are built of stone and timber with carved windows, and where homestays, not lodges, are the norm.

A typical loop runs from the Syabrubesi area to Gatlang, then over ridges to Tatopani, where natural hot springs are channelled into bathing pools, up to the viewpoint at Nagthali for views of Langtang and Ganesh Himal, down to Thuman and Timure, and back via Briddim. The high point at Nagthali is around 3,200 m.

Parts of the loop near Timure lie close to the Bhote Koshi, which flooded in August 2026, and the road links were damaged. Routes will need checking before each trip; check current status before you travel. The upper villages are worth the effort when access is safe.

Questions

How long is the Tamang Heritage Trail?

Most itineraries take 5 to 7 walking days from the Syabrubesi area, plus the road journeys from and to Kathmandu. It can be combined with the Langtang Valley trek for a 10 to 12 day trip. Walking days are 4 to 6 hours, and the highest point, around Nagthali, is about 3,200 m.

Is the Tamang Heritage Trail harder than the Langtang Valley trek?

It is generally easier on the body because it stays lower, mostly below about 3,200 m, so altitude is less of a concern. Some days include steep climbs and descents on village trails. It is a good choice for families, first-time trekkers and anyone more interested in village life than high mountains.

Was the Tamang Heritage Trail affected by the 2026 flood?

The flood of 26 August 2026 struck the Bhote Koshi valley, including Timure, which lies on the loop, and damaged Chilime hydropower near Gatlang and the roads around Syabrubesi. Higher villages such as Gatlang and Briddim sit well above the river, but access depends on repaired roads. Check current status before you travel.
