Walk through the winter mustard fields
A gentle hour on the field bunds around Gotihawa in December and January, when mustard flowers turn the plain yellow, with farmers at work, birds in the stubble and the pillar on the horizon.

In the Terai winter, after the rice harvest, many families sow mustard for oil. By late December the fields around Gotihawa are a sheet of yellow, broken only by mango trees, haystacks and the low mound of the stupa.
We walk the narrow earth bunds between fields with a local guide, stopping to talk with farmers where they are happy to chat. You will see the wheat coming up green, small irrigation channels and the clay-walled houses where families dry chillies and dung cakes in the sun.
The walk is flat and about 3 km. Late afternoon light is warm and low, which is what photographers come for.

Questions
When does mustard flower in the Nepal Terai?
Mustard is usually sown after the rice harvest in October and November and flowers from late December into January, depending on sowing time and weather. By February most fields are setting seed. For the brightest yellow, plan your Kapilvastu day for the last week of December or the first half of January.
Is it OK to walk through farmers' fields?
Walk only on the earth bunds and paths between fields, never through standing crops. Our guide asks permission where needed. Farmers in Kapilvastu are generally welcoming, but keep groups small and quiet, and ask before taking close photographs of people.
What should I wear for the field walk?
Wear closed shoes that can get dusty or muddy, light long trousers and a warm layer, as late afternoons in December and January cool quickly to around 12–15 °C. A hat and sunglasses help with the low sun. Modest clothing is appreciated in the villages.
