The old bazaar on foot

A morning walk through Tansen's steep Newar lanes: Sitalpati and the Golghar, the Amar Narayan temple and its stone spouts, the Bhagwati temple, the Tansen Durbar museum and the Baggi Dhoka gate, with tea stops along the way.

We start at Sitalpati, the main square, where the octagonal Golghar pavilion stands among shops and the town's porters wait for work. From here the lanes drop and climb in every direction, lined with three-storey Newar houses with carved wooden windows and tiled roofs.

Down one lane is the Amar Narayan temple, a tiered temple from the early 19th century with carved roof struts and a courtyard of stone water spouts where people still fill their pots. Up another is the Bhagwati temple, raised after the war with the British East India Company in 1814–16 and centre of the town's Bhagwati Jatra.

We finish at the Tansen Durbar, the rebuilt palace of Palpa's Rana governors, with its museum and the great Baggi Dhoka gate. Then tea and sel roti in a shop on the square.

Questions

Is the Tansen heritage walk difficult?

It is a walk of 3–4 km over 3 hours with stops, but Tansen's lanes are very steep, with long flights of stone steps. Anyone reasonably fit can do it at a gentle pace. Wear shoes with good grip, especially after rain, and carry water.

Is the Palpa Durbar museum open every day?

Government museums in Nepal usually open on weekdays and some Sundays, from morning to late afternoon, and often close on Saturdays and public holidays. Hours change by season, so check current status before you travel. We plan the walk so the museum is open when we reach it.

When was the Bhagwati temple in Tansen built?

The Bhagwati temple is linked with the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814–16 and was raised after fighting with the British East India Company in the Butwal area. Local accounts credit the Palpa commander Ujir Singh Thapa. Its festival, Bhagwati Jatra, still remembers that time.
