Morning puja at Kag Chode gompa
Visit Kagbeni's Sakya monastery, traditionally founded in 1429, at the hour of morning prayers. Sit at the back of the assembly hall while young monks chant, then climb to the roof for the view over the village, the confluence and the road north to Lo.

Kag Chode Thupten Samphel Ling belongs to the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism, the same school as the main monasteries of Lo Manthang. It is traditionally dated to 1429, when this part of the Kali Gandaki lay within the sphere of the kingdom of Lo. The red-walled gompa stands above the village beside the ruined khar, and its monks once served all the villages of Baragaun. It is the largest and oldest religious building in the village.
We go early, when the monks gather in the assembly hall for morning prayers. Most are young novices from Mustang and nearby areas who study here. You sit quietly at the back while the chanting, drums and horns fill the dim room. Afterwards, the caretaker or a senior monk can show you the old statues, thangkas and wall paintings, some of which are faded with age and smoke from butter lamps.
Before you leave, climb to the roof. From here you look across Kagbeni's packed flat roofs to the gravel plain where the Jhong Khola meets the Kali Gandaki, and north up the valley towards Upper Mustang. Nilgiri rises to the south. A donation is expected; we suggest NPR 300–500 per person. Photography inside the hall is usually not allowed, so ask first. Allow about an hour and a half in all.

Questions
How old is the monastery in Kagbeni?
Kag Chode Thupten Samphel Ling is traditionally dated to 1429, in the 15th century, when the area was within the sphere of the kingdom of Lo. It belongs to the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism. Parts of the building have been repaired over the centuries, but it remains the spiritual centre of Kagbeni.
What time are prayers at Kagbeni monastery?
Morning prayers usually begin around sunrise, often 6–7 am, and may last an hour. Times vary with the season and the monastic calendar, and the monks may be away for rituals elsewhere. Your guide or lodge can confirm the evening before. Visitors are welcome to sit quietly at the back.
Can I take photos inside Kag Chode gompa?
Usually not inside the assembly hall, and never during prayers without permission. Many monasteries in Mustang restrict interior photography to protect old paintings and for religious reasons. Photography on the roof and courtyard is generally fine. Always ask the caretaker first and respect a refusal.
