Sunset over the Terai from Bhedetar
An evening on the Bhedetar ridge to watch the sun go down over the plains of eastern Nepal, the Sapta Koshi catching the last light, and the lights of Dharan and the Terai towns coming on below.

We drive up from Dharan in the late afternoon, about 30–45 minutes on the winding road, and walk to a viewpoint on the ridge. A viewing area known locally as Charles Point and other spots along the ridge look south over the plains. Our guide picks a place away from the busiest stalls, with a clear line west and south, and we settle in with tea while the light begins to change.
As the sun drops, the Terai turns gold and then hazy blue. On clear evenings the wide braided channels of the Sapta Koshi shine to the south-west, and the towns of the plains show as clusters of roofs and trees. Our guide points out Dharan, Itahari and the hills of Dhankuta to the north, and explains how the Koshi rivers gather from the mountains before spreading out across the plain.
After dark, the lights of the plains come on in a wide grid, spreading to the horizon. We finish with tea or sekuwa at a roadside restaurant before driving back down or staying the night on the ridge. It is a relaxed, easy evening that suits families, couples and anyone arriving in the east, and it gives a first sense of how sharply the hills rise from the plains here.

Questions
What can you see from Bhedetar?
On clear days, the Terai plains of Sunsari and Morang spread south, with Dharan directly below and the Sapta Koshi river to the south-west. To the north, the hills of Dhankuta roll toward the mountains. At night you see the lights of the plains.
When is the best time for the view at Bhedetar?
October to March gives the clearest air, especially just after rain. Sunset is the most popular time. In April and May haze often blurs the plains, and from June to September cloud and rain are common.
Is Bhedetar crowded at sunset?
On Saturdays and public holidays, yes, with families from Dharan and Biratnagar filling the viewpoints and restaurants. On weekdays it is much quieter. We choose viewpoints a little away from the busiest spots either way.
