Rhododendron day on the Basantapur ridge
A spring day trip north from Hile to Basantapur and a walk into the rhododendron forests of the Tinjure–Milke–Jaljale ridge, when the gurans, Nepal's national flower, blooms red and pink along the trail.
In March and April we drive north from Hile to Basantapur, a road-head bazaar on the ridge, about an hour or two away depending on the road. From here footpaths lead into the forests of the Tinjure–Milke–Jaljale area, known for its rhododendrons, including the red gurans that is Nepal's national flower. Other species bloom in pink and white, and the forests also hold oak, magnolia and many birds.
We walk for 3–4 hours through forest and open ridges, with stops for lunch and tea in small settlements of herders and farmers. The colour depends on the year and the altitude: lower forests bloom first, higher ones later. Our guide knows where the trees are at their best that week. On clear days the ridges also give views north toward the snow peaks, though spring haze often softens them.
We drive back to Hile in the afternoon, in time for a tongba evening. For a longer trip, the ridge can be walked over several days with homestay nights, linking villages and viewpoints along the Tinjure, Milke and Jaljale sections. It is a moderate trek with little foreign traffic, and we can arrange a route, guide and homestays to fit your time and fitness.
