Walk to Sandakpur from the Ilam side
A quiet multi-day walk from the Ilam side up to the Singalila ridge, through farm villages, cardamom plots and rhododendron forest, staying in family homestays and ending with sunrise on four of the world's five highest peaks at 3,636 m.

This is a farm-and-forest walk rather than a lodge trek. We drive from Ilam to the trailhead, usually near Mai Pokhari or a village beyond it, and walk on village paths through maize, cardamom and potato fields. Nights are in homestays where families cook dinner and you sleep in a spare room. You pass schools, small shops, water mills and shrines, and meet more farmers than trekkers.
Higher up the trail enters forest of rhododendron, oak, magnolia and bamboo, and the villages thin out to herders' huts and small clearings. The last day climbs onto the ridge itself, where the views open to the north. Daily walking is 4–6 hours with steady climbs; the route is moderate if you are fit and used to hills. Paths can be muddy and slippery after rain, and the last climb to the ridge is steep.
After sunrise on the ridge we walk or drive down, depending on the road, and return to Ilam for a hot shower and a proper bed. We arrange a licensed guide, porters if you want them and the homestays, and keep the pace slow enough to enjoy the villages. The route can be shortened by using a jeep for part of the way up or down, which suits travellers with less time.

Questions
How hard is the walk to Sandakpur from Nepal?
It is moderate: 4–6 hours a day on steep village paths and forest trails, climbing to 3,636 m. You need to be fit and comfortable with long uphill days. There are no technical sections. Rain makes the paths slippery, so good boots matter.
Do I need a permit for Sandakpur from the Nepal side?
The Nepal side of Sandakpur is not a national park or restricted area, so no special trekking permit has been needed as far as we know. Crossing onto the Indian side requires Indian entry papers. Rules can change; check current status before you travel.
Where do we sleep on the Sandakpur walk?
In village homestays and small family lodges on the Nepal side. Rooms are simple, with shared toilets, blankets and home-cooked dal bhat. Bring a sleeping bag rated to about minus 10 °C for the ridge night, and a head torch, as electricity can be limited.
