Rhododendron forests of the Lamjura La
Walk west from Junbesi up to the Lamjura La, about 3,530 m, the highest point on the old Jiri–Everest trail, through forests of rhododendron, magnolia, fir and hemlock that blaze red, pink and white in March and April.

The Lamjura La is a broad forested pass on the ridge west of Junbesi. Coming from Junbesi, the trail climbs about 850 m through fields and then dense forest: tall rhododendron trees, magnolia, silver fir and hemlock, hung with moss and old-man's-beard lichen. In March and April the rhododendrons, including Nepal's national flower, Rhododendron arboreum, flower in red, pink and white.
Birdlife is rich. Look and listen for laughingthrushes, sunbirds, minivets and, with luck, the Himalayan monal on the higher slopes. At the pass, prayer flags and a few teahouses mark the crossing, with views back towards Numbur on clear days. On the far side the old trail drops towards Sete and Jiri.
You can walk to the pass and back to Junbesi in a long day, or cross it as part of a longer Solu trek. Snow can lie on the pass in winter and early spring. Carry warm layers, rain gear and lunch. In spring, flower season overlaps with afternoon showers, so start early and enjoy the forest before cloud settles in.

Questions
How high is the Lamjura La?
About 3,530 m, the highest point on the old Jiri–Everest trekking route. From Junbesi, at about 2,675 m, the climb is roughly 850 m through forest. It takes 3–4 hours up and 2–3 down. Altitude is moderate, but the climb is steady and long.
When do rhododendrons bloom on the Lamjura La?
Usually from mid-March to late April, depending on altitude and the year. Lower forests flower first, and the bloom moves uphill. Red Rhododendron arboreum, Nepal's national flower, is joined by pink and white species higher up. Spring brings flowers but more haze and afternoon showers.
Is the Lamjura La part of the Everest trek?
It is part of the old walking route from Jiri to Everest, used before the Lukla airstrip opened in 1964 and still walked by trekkers who want the slow approach. From Junbesi the route continues east via Ringmo and the Taksindu La to the Dudh Koshi and Lukla.
