Walk Kunde and the Hillary hospital
Stroll west from Khumjung to its twin village of Kunde, past walled potato fields and chortens to the Kunde hospital founded by the Himalayan Trust in 1966, which still treats villagers, porters and trekkers. A gentle, flat walk for a rest afternoon.

Khumjung and Kunde lie side by side on the same shelf, separated by fields and a line of chortens. The path between them is almost level, rare in Khumbu, and walking it in the afternoon light, with Khumbila above and yaks grazing the stubble, is one of the calmest hours of any trek. Kunde is smaller, with its own gompa and a cluster of stone houses at the foot of the hill.
At the western edge stands Kunde Hospital, founded in 1966 by the Himalayan Trust as the first proper hospital in Khumbu. For decades Sherpa families had relied on lamas, local healers or a week's walk to reach a doctor. The hospital, staffed for many years by volunteer doctors from New Zealand and Canada and now led by Nepali doctors, treats villagers, porters and trekkers, from childbirth and injuries to altitude illness.
You can walk past and look; the hospital is a working clinic, so we do not go in without reason. If you are unwell, though, this is where you come. On the way back, stop at a Kunde house for tea. Ask your guide which families are known for their butter tea, and why the old houses keep the animals downstairs.

Questions
When was Kunde Hospital founded?
Kunde Hospital was founded in 1966 by Edmund Hillary's Himalayan Trust, the first hospital in Khumbu. It still operates, serving Sherpa villages, porters and trekkers, and is now run by Nepali doctors. It handles general medicine, maternal health and altitude-related illness. In an emergency your guide will know how to reach it.
How far is Kunde from Khumjung?
About 10–15 minutes on a nearly level path across the fields. Both villages sit at around 3,800 m on the same shelf below Khumbila. A loop through both, with time at the gompas, takes about two hours at a relaxed pace and makes a good second acclimatisation walk.
Can I get treatment for altitude sickness at Kunde?
Yes. Kunde Hospital treats altitude illness and can give oxygen and medicines. The essential treatment for serious altitude sickness is still descent. Higher on the Everest trail, the Himalayan Rescue Association runs a seasonal aid post at Pheriche. Check current status before you travel and make sure your insurance covers helicopter evacuation.
