Ama Dablam is the mountain of the Everest trail: you see it from Namche, it dominates Tengboche, and at Pangboche you stand almost at its foot. The base camp for its popular south-west ridge route lies on a broad meadow at about 4,600 m, reached from Pangboche by crossing the Imja Khola on a bridge and climbing a steady trail through yak pastures.

The walk takes about 3 hours up and 2 down, gaining roughly 600 m. In autumn the meadow may hold an expedition camp of yellow tents, with climbers preparing for the ridge above. In spring it is quieter. The view of the mountain's face, with its hanging glacier, the dablam of its name, is close and huge, and on the way back Tengboche, Everest and Lhotse fill the horizon.

This is an excellent acclimatisation day before Dingboche: climb high, return to sleep in Pangboche. Carry water, lunch and warm layers, as there are no teahouses on the route in most seasons. Turn back if you feel unwell. Respect expedition camps; ask before entering and do not photograph climbers' kit without permission.

Questions

How high is Ama Dablam base camp?

Ama Dablam base camp, on the meadow below the south-west ridge, is at about 4,600 m. From Pangboche, at about 3,985 m, the climb is roughly 600 m and takes 3 hours or so, with about 2 hours to return. It is non-technical walking on yak trails, but altitude makes it a real effort.

Is the Ama Dablam base camp hike worth it?

Yes, if you have a spare day. It gives superb views of Ama Dablam, a sense of an expedition base camp and excellent acclimatisation for higher stages. Many travellers find it quieter and more personal than the main trail. It fits well as a rest day in Pangboche before going on to Dingboche.

Do I need a permit to visit Ama Dablam base camp?

Trekkers need only the usual Sagarmatha National Park entry and Khumbu Pasanglhamu municipality permits to walk to the base camp. Climbing Ama Dablam itself requires a separate expedition permit and a licensed team. Since April 2023 trekkers are meant to walk with a licensed guide; check current status before you travel.
