Morning prayers at Thame's cliffside gompa
Climb 20–30 minutes from the village fields to Thame gompa, built against a cliff high above the Bhote Koshi, and sit in on the morning chanting. One of Khumbu's oldest monasteries, it stages Mani Rimdu in spring.
Thame gompa looks as if it grew out of the rock: whitewashed buildings stacked against a cliff above the village, with prayer flags strung to the ridge. It is counted among the oldest monasteries in Khumbu, belonging, like most Sherpa gompas, to the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. The climb from the fields is short and steep, past chortens and a stream-turned prayer wheel.
Come early. In the morning the prayer hall fills with the deep drone of chanting, horns and drums, and butter lamps light the murals of Guru Rinpoche and the protector deities. Visitors may sit quietly at the back. Remove shoes and hats, never point your feet at the altar, and ask before photographing. A donation in the box helps support the monks.
Thame is one of three gompas that stage Mani Rimdu, the masked-dance festival brought from Rongbuk in Tibet. Thame's is usually in May, a smaller and more local event than Tengboche's in autumn, with families from the Bhote Koshi valley gathered in the courtyard. If your dates fit, it is a rare chance to see the cham dances in a village setting. Check current status before you travel.

Questions
When is Mani Rimdu at Thame?
Thame's Mani Rimdu usually falls in May, set by the Tibetan lunar calendar, while Tengboche's is in October or November. The public days include a blessing, masked cham dances and a fire ceremony. Exact dates are confirmed locally each year, so check current status before you travel and plan Namche to Thame with a spare day.
How old is Thame monastery?
Thame gompa is considered one of the oldest monasteries in Khumbu, though exact founding dates differ between accounts, so we do not quote one. It belongs to the Nyingma tradition and is linked by teachers and rituals to Tengboche and to Rongbuk in Tibet. Ask the monks; they tell its history with care.
Can visitors attend morning prayers at Thame gompa?
Usually yes, if you are quiet and respectful. Arrive early, remove shoes and hat, sit at the back, and do not use flash. Ask before taking any photographs inside. A small donation is appreciated. If the hall is closed for a private ritual, wait outside or visit later in the day.
