Apples, beans and wool in Khalanga bazaar
Wander Jumla's main bazaar with a local guide, tasting apples, buying marshi rice and Jumli beans, and looking for the hand-woven woollen radi rugs of the Karnali hills.

Khalanga bazaar is small enough to walk end to end in twenty minutes, but it holds most of what the Karnali produces. In late summer and autumn, apples arrive by the basket from orchards across the district, crisp and sweet; the town is well known in Nepal for them, and they fetch a premium in Kathmandu.
Grain shops sell sacks of marshi rice, speckled Jumli beans, buckwheat, barley and walnuts. Look also for herbs from the high pastures and for woollen goods: radi, thick hand-woven rugs, and pakhi, woollen blankets, made from sheep wool in hill villages, used on every bed in winter.
Go in the morning when the shops open and villagers arrive with produce. Your guide can translate, help with fair prices and point out the difference between local goods and those trucked in from elsewhere. Remember weight limits on small planes before you buy too much.

Questions
Are Jumla apples really special?
They are prized across Nepal for their crisp texture and sweetness, grown at altitude in a cold, dry climate, often with few chemical inputs. The season runs roughly August to October. Eat them fresh in Jumla; they are much cheaper than in Kathmandu.
What is a radi?
A radi is a thick, hand-woven woollen rug from the hills of western Nepal, used as a mattress or blanket. Pakhi is a related woollen blanket or shawl. Both are made from local sheep wool, often in natural colours, and are very warm.
What is the luggage limit on flights from Jumla?
Small planes from Jumla to Nepalgunj usually allow around 10–15 kg of checked baggage, with charges for excess and space limited when flights are full. Rules differ by airline, so check current status before you travel and pack souvenirs accordingly.
