The southern route to Limi leaves the Humla Karnali at its confluence with the Salli Khola and climbs north through remote valleys to the Nyalu La, at about 4,995 m. It is the highest point of the Limi loop and one of the toughest days on any trek in the far west.

The climb goes over scree and often snow, with wide views back over the Humla ranges. On the far side you descend to the Talung valley, used for summer grazing, and after another day's walk enter the Limi valley near Takche, east of Jang.

Cross only with good acclimatisation, an experienced guide and a supported crew, as there are no lodges. Start before dawn, carry plenty of water and warm clothing, and be ready to turn back in bad weather. Many trekkers do the loop in the other direction, entering via Hilsa and leaving over the Nyalu La.

Questions

How hard is the Nyalu La crossing?

It is demanding: a long day climbing to about 4,995 m over scree and sometimes snow, with no shelter on the pass. You need good fitness, previous high-altitude experience, proper acclimatisation and a supported crew with tents.

Which direction is best for the Limi loop?

Many groups go clockwise, walking to Hilsa first and entering Limi via Til, then leaving over the Nyalu La, which allows gradual acclimatisation. Others reverse it. Your guide will choose based on conditions, permits and group fitness.

Is the Nyalu La part of the Great Himalaya Trail?

The far western section of the Great Himalaya Trail ends in Humla at Hilsa, and some long-distance itineraries finish with the Limi valley and the Nyalu La. You can walk it as a stand-alone trek or as the final stage of a longer traverse.
