Dawn in Khwopa's toles and water spouts
An early walk for those staying overnight: neighbours at morning puja, women at the stone spouts, farmers heading out with hoes, and the squares empty of visitors. Best light for photographs, and the best time to feel how the town really lives.

Bhaktapur wakes early. By 6 am in autumn, people are walking to their neighbourhood shrine with small plates of rice, flowers, vermilion and a bell, touching each god on the way. We follow that circuit through the toles round Taumadhi and Tachupal, stopping wherever something is happening.
Water spouts are the centre of morning life. At sunken hitis, carved with makara heads, women fill copper and plastic pots and wash vegetables, and men wash before work. We explain how the spouts were fed by old channels from the hills, and why some have dried up as groundwater has dropped.
As the sun rises, farmers set off with hoes towards the fields east of town, tea shops fill and the first school children appear in uniform. The squares are still almost empty of visitors, and the low light on brick and gilded roofs is at its best. We finish with tea and fried breakfast bread before you head back for breakfast.

Questions
Is it worth staying overnight in Bhaktapur?
Yes. Day visitors arrive from about 9 am and leave by late afternoon. If you stay, you see the town at dawn and after dusk, when locals reclaim the squares and the lamps are lit. Guesthouses inside the old town are simple to comfortable and many have rooftop views.
What time does Bhaktapur open?
The old town is a living town and never closes; the ticket booths on the main approach roads operate from early morning to evening. If you stay overnight, your ticket covers your stay. Some museums and palace areas keep shorter hours, roughly 9 am to 4 or 5 pm.
Can I photograph people at puja in Bhaktapur?
Wide shots of a square at dawn are fine. For close portraits, especially of people praying, ask first with a gesture and accept a no. Do not step in front of someone offering at a shrine, do not use flash, and never touch offerings or ritual objects.
