Cycle from Patan to Bungamati and Khokana
A half-day bike ride from Patan south through Nakhu and rice fields to Bungamati, Karya Binayak and Khokana, then back. About 20 km in total, mostly on roads and lanes, with a few short climbs. Guided, with good bikes and helmets.

We start early from Patan, before traffic builds, and ride south through Jawalakhel and Nakhu, where the city thins into brick factories, fields and small settlements. The first stretch shares the road with buses and trucks, so your guide leads and sets the pace. Within 30 minutes, lanes narrow and fields open up.
Bungamati appears on its spur, and we push bikes through its lanes to the temple square for tea and a rest. Then we ride or walk the bikes over the hill past Karya Binayak to Khokana, stopping to see mustard seed drying and the old village core.
The return leg takes a different route back towards Patan, with a few short climbs and fine views of the valley rim. The total is about 20 km, with 3 to 4 hours of riding and stops. The ride suits anyone comfortable on a bike in mixed traffic; e-bikes are available on request.

Questions
Is it safe to cycle in the Kathmandu Valley?
With a guide and a good route, yes. Main roads have heavy, unpredictable traffic, so we keep them short and use village lanes where possible. Helmets are provided and recommended. Start early to avoid traffic and heat, and avoid cycling in heavy rain.
How difficult is the Bungamati bike ride?
It is easy to moderate: about 20 km with a few short climbs, on paved roads and rough village lanes. Anyone who rides a bike regularly can manage it. E-bikes are available for less confident riders. Children over about 12 can join with a suitable bike.
Can I rent a bike in Patan or Thamel?
Yes. Several shops rent mountain bikes and e-bikes by the half or full day, often with helmets and locks. Check brakes and tyres before you leave. For village routes like Bungamati, a guided ride saves time finding the lanes and avoids the busiest roads.
