Dhulikhel's old Newar town on foot

A walk through Dhulikhel's old core behind the highway: brick lanes, the Bhagwati and Harisiddhi temples, water spouts and squares. Meet shopkeepers and farmers, and hear how a trading town on the road to Tibet became a university town.

Most people see only Dhulikhel's highway strip. We step behind it into the old Newar town, where narrow brick lanes wind between houses with carved windows. Early in the morning, people are at the water spouts and small shrines, and shops are opening for the day.

We visit the temple of Bhagwati, the mother goddess, in its square, and the Harisiddhi temple nearby, as well as smaller shrines to Ganesh and Narayan. Your guide explains how the town's guthis organise festivals and maintain temples, and how the town grew as a stop on the trade route from the valley towards Tibet.

We also look at how the old town is changing: houses rebuilt after 2015, new concrete beside old brick, and students and hospital staff living alongside long-time residents. The walk ends at a khaja shop for tea and Newar snacks, or at the start of the trail up to the Kali temple viewpoint.

Questions

Is Dhulikhel worth visiting?

Yes, for its mountain views, its old Newar town and as a base for hikes to Namobuddha and Panauti. It is quieter than the valley cities and a little warmer than Nagarkot. One or two nights works well between Kathmandu and a trek or a drive to the Terai.

How long does it take to walk around Dhulikhel old town?

About 1 to 2 hours at an easy pace, including temples, squares and water spouts. Add an hour for the climb to the Kali temple viewpoint above town. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times, when locals are out.

Is there an entry fee for Dhulikhel?

At the time of writing there is no general entry fee for the old town, though temples welcome donations. Some sites in the valley have introduced fees in recent years, so check current status before you travel. Carry small notes for donations.
