Walk from Swayambhu down to old Kathmandu

After the summit, walk east down the stairway, cross the Bishnumati river and follow old lanes past Bijeshwari and small Newar neighbourhoods to the Durbar Square. A way of seeing how the sacred hill and the city connect, on foot.

Most visitors take a taxi between Swayambhu and the Durbar Square. Walking instead shows how closely they are linked: the old pilgrimage route runs from the city across the Bishnumati river to the foot of the hill. We start at the summit after a visit, walk down the eastern stairway and turn towards the river.

Near the Bishnumati, the Bijeshwari temple stands above the river bank, a quiet shrine to a Buddhist and Hindu goddess, and nearby ghats are used for rituals. We cross the bridge and enter a maze of old neighbourhoods, with brick houses, water spouts, small courtyards and shrines that rarely see visitors.

The route leads east through Chhetrapati or the lanes south of it into the old city, reaching the Durbar Square from the west. The walk is about 3 km and takes 1.5 to 2 hours with stops. It ends at Kasthamandap, where you can continue straight into a Durbar Square visit.

Questions

Can I walk from Swayambhunath to Kathmandu Durbar Square?

Yes. It is about 3 km and takes 1 to 2 hours depending on stops, crossing the Bishnumati river and passing through old neighbourhoods. The streets are shared with motorbikes and pavements are patchy, so walk in the morning and wear good shoes. A guide helps with the unmarked lanes.

How far is Swayambhunath from Thamel?

About 3 km. A taxi takes 15 to 20 minutes; walking takes about 40 minutes via Chhetrapati and the Bishnumati bridge. The eastern stairway is the walker's approach; taxis can also drop at the western car park, which is closer to the summit.

Is the Bishnumati river walk safe?

Yes, by day. The riverbanks are urban and can be dirty and dusty, but the route is used daily by locals. Keep valuables close in crowded lanes, avoid the riverside after dark, and watch for traffic at the bridge crossings.
