Melamchi Ghyang and Tarkeghyang face each other across the Melamchi valley, both at around 2,500 to 2,600 m, but the walk between them is long: down through forest and fields to a bridge over the Melamchi Khola, then a steady climb up the other side. It is the classic day of the Helambu loop.

Start at the gompa of Melamchi Ghyang, with its prayer wheels and painted interior, then pass mani walls and chortens on the way down. Small hamlets on the slopes grow maize, potatoes and millet, and children often walk part of the way with you. The bridge at the bottom is a good lunch stop beside the water.

The climb to Tarkeghyang takes 3 hours or more, through terraces and then forest. Arriving in the late afternoon, you can visit the large gompa before dinner. It is a day that shows how Hyolmo villages are linked by their temples and by the walking that has always connected them.

Questions

How long does it take to walk from Melamchi Ghyang to Tarkeghyang?

About 6 to 7 hours with breaks: 2 to 3 hours down to the Melamchi Khola and 3 to 4 hours up to Tarkeghyang. The descent and ascent are each around 800 m. It is a full day; start by 8 am and carry lunch or eat at a small tea stop near the bridge.

Can I visit the gompas in Helambu?

Yes, most village gompas welcome visitors when the caretaker or lama is present. Remove your shoes, walk clockwise, keep your voice down and ask before taking photographs inside. A small donation for butter lamps is appreciated. Your guide can arrange a visit in advance.

Is the Melamchi valley safe after the 2021 flood?

The June 2021 flood hit the Melamchi Bazaar area and the valley floor hardest; the upper Hyolmo villages on the ridges were not in its path. Trails and bridges have been repaired since. Monsoon landslides remain a risk, so check current status before you travel, especially from June to September.
