Tarkeghyang sits on a ridge at about 2,600 m, a tight cluster of stone houses with wooden balconies around a large gompa. Many houses were rebuilt after 2015, some in the old style and some in new materials. We arrange a stay with a Hyolmo family through local contacts, with a simple private room and meals at the family hearth.

Evenings centre on the kitchen. Your hosts may cook potatoes, buckwheat or maize bread, greens and meat, with butter tea or local liquor. Your guide translates as you talk about farming, apples, family members in Kathmandu or abroad, and the gompa calendar.

In the morning, visit the gompa with a family member, walk the village lanes and watch the light come up over Jugal Himal. The stay pays a fair rate directly to the household, and you will see Helambu as a home rather than a trail.

Questions

How do I get to Tarkeghyang?

On foot, Tarkeghyang is 4 to 5 days from Sundarijal via Chisapani, Kutumsang and Tharepati, or a day from Melamchi Ghyang. By road, jeeps reach the village from Kathmandu via Melamchi Bazaar in about 4 to 6 hours in good conditions. Check current road status, as the Melamchi valley road has needed repairs.

What are the facilities in a Hyolmo homestay?

Expect a clean, simple private room with a bed and thick quilts, a shared toilet, often outside, and limited hot water. Meals are eaten with the family. Electricity is generally available but can be unreliable. It is less comfortable than a lodge, but far more personal; we pick homes our guides know.

What should I bring as a gift to a Hyolmo family?

Something small and useful: fruit or sweets from Kathmandu, notebooks and pens for children, or a white khata scarf. Avoid giving money directly to children. Your homestay fee is the main contribution, paid to the household, and your guide can advise on anything else that would be welcome.
