The kitchen is the warmest room in any Langtang lodge, and families spend their evenings there. We ask a host family whether guests can join them for an hour before dinner. You may help churn butter tea in a wooden or plastic churn, taste tsampa mixed into tea, and try dried yak cheese and local potatoes boiled in their skins.

Conversation is in Tibetan and Nepali, with your guide translating. Hosts often talk about herding, the routes to old pastures, the years in Kathmandu after the earthquake and what it took to rebuild. Some families still have relatives who traded with Kerung in Tibet.

Dinner follows in the dining room: dal bhat, Tibetan bread or thukpa. The evening costs no more than a modest extra fee to the family, but it changes how you see the village, and it puts money straight into a household budget.

Questions

What does butter tea taste like?

Butter tea is salty rather than sweet, made by churning strong tea with butter and salt. Think of a thin, warm soup more than a cup of tea. At altitude many trekkers come to like it because it is warming and adds fat and salt. Hosts keep refilling your cup; leave it full if you have had enough.

Is tsampa safe for people with gluten intolerance?

No. Tsampa is roasted barley flour, and barley contains gluten. In Langtang lodges, rice, potatoes, eggs and lentils are the safest options for people avoiding gluten. Tell your guide in advance so the lodge can plan meals, and bring some snacks from Kathmandu.

Do Langtang lodge families speak English?

Many lodge owners and younger family members speak some English, enough for menus and rooms. For a real conversation about life and history, a guide who speaks Nepali and ideally the local Tibetan dialect makes all the difference. Most of our Langtang guides are from Rasuwa.
