Walk to the 2015 avalanche memorial
A quiet walk with your guide across the debris field where the old village lay, to the memorial that names the people killed on 25 April 2015. It is the most important hour you will spend in the valley.

The trail from Ghora Tabela enters the valley where the avalanche struck. Today the debris is covered in grass and boulders, and it can be hard to picture a village beneath it. Your guide points out where houses, the old gompa and lodges once stood, and where the blast flattened forest on the opposite slope.
The memorial stands near the old site, with the names of those who died: Langtangpa families, guests from many countries, Nepali guides and porters. People leave khata scarves and stones. Walk around it clockwise, keep your voice low and ask your guide before taking photographs.
Many guides on this trail lost relatives or friends in 2015. If your guide wants to talk about it, listen; if not, do not press. The walk ends in the rebuilt village, where life has returned: children, yaks, smoke from lodge kitchens. Seeing both on the same afternoon is the truest way to understand Langtang.

Questions
How many people died in the 2015 Langtang avalanche?
Reports differ because many bodies were never recovered and records of trekkers and porters were incomplete. Wikipedia sources give figures from more than 200 confirmed dead to around 350 dead and missing, including villagers, foreign trekkers, guides and porters. Local people will give you their own count, often by family name.
Is it respectful to visit the Langtang memorial?
Yes, as long as you behave as you would at a cemetery or a chorten. Walk clockwise, do not climb on stones, keep your voice down and ask before photographing. Leaving a white khata scarf is a respected gesture. Your guide can explain the Buddhist practices around remembrance.
Where was the old Langtang village?
The old village stood on the valley floor beneath the slopes of Langtang Lirung, where the debris field is now. The new village was rebuilt mostly a short way east and slightly away from the most exposed ground. Your guide can show you the outline of the old settlement from the trail.
