The Jharahi is a small plains river that comes down from the Chure hills and runs past Ramagrama towards the Indian border. In the dry months it is shallow and clear, with sandy banks where children play and families wash clothes and cattle.

We walk about 3 km on the bank and back through the fields, with a local guide who can name the crops and the birds: egrets, kingfishers, lapwings and, in winter, wagtails on the sand. The stupa mound appears and disappears behind the trees.

Faxian described the Ramagrama stupa as standing by a pond and watched by a serpent; standing by the river you see why water is so central to the story.

Questions

Is the Jharahi river walk difficult?

No. It is a flat walk of about 3 km on riverbanks and field paths, taking around an hour at a gentle pace. Parts can be sandy or muddy, so wear closed shoes. It is suitable for children and older travellers who walk comfortably.

Can I walk by the river in the monsoon?

We do not recommend it. From July to September the Jharahi can rise quickly after heavy rain, banks become slippery and paths flood. The walk is best from November to March. Check current status before you travel if you plan to visit in the shoulder months.

What will I see on the river walk at Ramagrama?

Expect village life on the banks, such as washing, bathing buffalo and children fishing, plus rice and wheat fields and birds including egrets, kingfishers and lapwings. In winter wagtails and other migrants feed on the sand. The stupa mound is visible from several points.
