Circle the unopened relic stupa
A slow, guided circuit of the Ramagrama stupa: the story of the eight shares of the Buddha's ashes, the legend of the guarding nagas, the archaeology of the mound, and quiet time to chant or sit.

We arrive early, when the air over the river is still cool and the first pilgrims are lighting candles. Walking clockwise around the base, your guide tells the story of the Buddha's final days at Kushinagar and the dispute over his ashes, resolved by dividing them into eight shares.
At the riverside, the story turns to legend: the nagas who guarded the relics against Ashoka, and the flood that later broke the stupa. Then comes the archaeology: the mound's dating, the geophysical survey, and the buried monastery in the next field.
After the circuit there is time to sit. For Buddhists, this is a chance to honour relics that may still lie within the mound; for others, a quiet place on a riverbank with a remarkable story.

Questions
Are there really Buddha relics inside Ramagrama stupa?
No one knows for certain, because the core of the stupa has never been excavated. Nepal's archaeologists believe it is the only one of the eight original relic stupas left intact. Theravada tradition, however, says the relics were carried to Sri Lanka after a flood. Both views are honoured at the site.
Why has Ramagrama never been excavated?
Because of its religious importance, Nepal's archaeologists have so far chosen non-invasive methods such as geophysical survey rather than digging into the stupa's core. Opening a relic stupa would be a major decision involving Buddhist communities as well as scholars. Plans for the site may change, so check current status before you travel.
What are the eight original relic stupas?
Buddhist texts list stupas built after the Buddha's cremation at Rajagaha, Vesali, Kapilavastu, Allakappa, Ramagrama, Vethadipa, Pava and Kushinagar. Several of these locations are known or proposed today. Ramagrama is the only one in Nepal identified with confidence and the only one said to remain unopened.
