Sunrise over the Himalaya from the ridge
Wake before dawn and walk to the viewpoint on the Swargadwari ridge to watch the sun light up Dhaulagiri, the Annapurnas and Machhapuchhre, with the hills of Pyuthan and Rolpa in shadow below.

Staying overnight at Swargadwari has one great reward: sunrise. We walk a few minutes from the rest house to an open point on the ridge in the dark, wrapped in jackets, with tea in a flask.
As the sky lightens, the snow peaks appear far to the north-east: Dhaulagiri, then the Annapurna range and the sharp fishtail of Machhapuchhre, turning pink and gold as the sun reaches them. Below, the valleys of Pyuthan are full of mist.
Back at the ashram the morning worship is starting, and the smell of ghee from the yagya kunda drifts across the courtyard.

Questions
Which mountains can you see from Swargadwari?
On clear mornings the views from the ridge include Dhaulagiri, the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhre to the north-east. Clarity is best from October to February at sunrise. From April haze often hides the peaks, and in the monsoon they are usually lost in cloud.
How cold is Swargadwari at dawn?
At about 2,100 m, dawn temperatures from December to February can be close to freezing, and windy on the ridge. In October, November, March and April expect around 5–10 °C at dawn. Bring a warm jacket, hat and gloves for the sunrise walk.
Do I need to stay overnight to see the sunrise?
Yes, in practice. Swargadwari is several hours from the nearest towns with comfortable hotels, so the only way to be on the ridge at dawn is to sleep at the ashram rest houses or a nearby lodge. Book ahead if your visit falls on a festival or full-moon day.
