Lakeshore walk from Ringmo
A gentle morning walk from Ringmo along the shore of Phoksundo, past chortens and prayer walls, to the Bon gompa on the eastern side, with the turquoise water changing colour as the sun rises and clouds pass over the cliffs.

We leave Ringmo after breakfast, when the lake is still and the light low. The path follows the southern and eastern shore, past chortens, mani walls and the small fields of the village. The water changes colour constantly: pale green in the shallows, turquoise further out, deep blue in the centre where the lake drops to over 130 m. Snow peaks and bare grey cliffs rise all around, reflected on calm mornings.
After about an hour we reach the Bon gompa on the eastern shore, where prayer flags stretch from the roof to the water's edge. A caretaker may be present to open the shrine room. The gompa holds annual prayers, and its position makes it one of the most photographed buildings in Dolpo. Walk around it counter-clockwise, the Bon way, and leave a donation. Sit for a while on the shore; it is a deeply peaceful place.
We return to Ringmo by the same path, perhaps stopping at viewpoints above the shore for a different angle on the lake. By midday the wind rises and ruffles the surface, so the morning is best for reflections. Do not swim or wash in the lake; it is sacred to the people of Ringmo, and the water is extremely cold. Carry water and sun protection. Allow about three hours for the whole walk.

Questions
Why is Phoksundo Lake turquoise?
The colour comes from the lake's depth, clear water and fine rock particles suspended in it, which scatter light and give the green and turquoise shades, with deep blue at the centre. The colour changes with the angle of the sun, cloud and wind. It is strongest on clear, calm mornings.
Can I swim in Phoksundo Lake?
No. The lake is sacred to the Bon and Buddhist people of Ringmo and Dolpo, and swimming or washing in it is not appropriate. The water is also very cold, at around 3,600 m. Enjoy it from the shore and paths. Do not use soap or leave any rubbish near the water.
How long should I stay at Phoksundo Lake?
Plan at least two nights in Ringmo, giving you a full day to walk the shore, visit the Bon gompas and rest after the 3-day approach. A third night allows a day hike along the western shore trail or up to viewpoints. The extra days also help acclimatisation if you continue to Dho Tarap or Upper Dolpo.
