Climb the Phedi steps to Dhampus
The classic first climb of Annapurna trekking: about 500 m of stone steps and forest path from Phedi on the Baglung road up to the Dhampus ridge, with the snow peaks appearing at the top.

Phedi means the foot of a hill, and that is what it is: a handful of shops on the Pokhara–Baglung road where the trail begins. You cross a small stream and start up. The steps are uneven stone, laid by villagers and maintained over decades, climbing steeply through forest of chestnut, schima and rhododendron with glimpses of terraces through the trees. Some sections are steep enough that you will want to stop every few minutes, and that is fine.
Go slowly. Your guide will say bistarai, slowly, and mean it. You share the path with villagers carrying loads, schoolchildren running down and porters heading up. Tea shops appear at the right moments. After about an hour and a half the gradient eases, the trees open and the first houses of Dhampus appear. Children may walk with you for a while and practise their English; it is a friendly trail.
Then the reward: from the ridge, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre stand across the valley, often with the morning still clear. Stop for tea on a lodge terrace and let your legs recover. Many walkers decide here that they like trekking; a few decide they will take the jeep next time. If you arrive in the morning, the views are usually clear until about 10 am. Lodges serve lunch from late morning, and many walkers continue to Pothana or Australian Camp in the afternoon.

Questions
How long is the walk from Phedi to Dhampus?
Most walkers take 1.5–2 hours from Phedi to the first houses of Dhampus, climbing about 500 m on stone steps and forest path. Fit walkers do it faster, families with children slower. Coming down takes about an hour. The village is long, so allow extra time to reach lodges further along the ridge.
Can I drive to Dhampus instead of walking?
Yes. A road now reaches Dhampus from the Baglung road, and jeeps from Pokhara take about 1.5 hours in total. It is useful for older travellers, young children or those with heavy bags. The road is rough in places and can be closed by mud in the monsoon. Walking up the steps is the traditional and more rewarding way.
Is the Phedi to Dhampus trail difficult?
It is steep but short. The whole climb is stone steps and path with no exposure, so the challenge is fitness and knees rather than skill. Walking poles help. Start early to avoid heat and take breaks at tea shops. Anyone who can climb stairs for an hour or two at a steady pace can manage it.
