Ice Lake acclimatisation hike above Braga
The best rest-day hike in Manang: climb about 1,100 m from Braga to Kicho Tal, the Ice Lake, at around 4,600 m, for a panorama of Annapurna II, III and IV, Gangapurna and Tilicho Peak, then sleep low again in Manang.

Climb high, sleep low: that is the principle behind this hike. From Braga, just below Manang, a steep trail zigzags up the northern side of the valley past yak pastures and herders' shelters. The gain is relentless, about 1,100 m, so walk slowly and stop often. Within an hour the view opens across the valley to the glaciers.
Kicho Tal, the Ice Lake, lies in a high bowl at roughly 4,600 m and is often partly frozen in autumn and spring. The panorama from its shore is one of the best on the circuit: Annapurna II, III and IV, Gangapurna and Tilicho Peak across the valley, with the Marsyangdi far below. Blue sheep sometimes graze on the slopes.
Allow 6–7 hours return. Start early, carry water, snacks and warm layers, and turn back if you feel unwell; the point is acclimatisation, not the summit. Returning to sleep at 3,519 m after the climb is exactly what helps your body prepare for Thorong La.

Questions
How high is Ice Lake near Manang?
Ice Lake, Kicho Tal, sits at roughly 4,600 m, about 1,100 m above Manang and Braga. Figures vary slightly by source. It is a steep day hike of 6–7 hours return, used for acclimatisation before Thorong La. Because you sleep back in Manang, the high climb helps your body adjust.
Is the Ice Lake hike necessary for Thorong La?
It is not compulsory, but a climb-high, sleep-low day hike from Manang helps acclimatisation, and Ice Lake is the most rewarding option. If you feel unwell, choose a shorter hike, such as the Gangapurna Lake viewpoint or the walk to Braga monastery, and rest. Never push on with worsening altitude symptoms.
What should I bring on the Ice Lake hike?
Bring 2 litres of water, snacks or a packed lunch, warm layers, windproof jacket, hat, gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen. There are few or no shops on the trail. Walking poles help on the steep descent. Start by 7–8 am to return before afternoon wind and cloud. Your guide should accompany you.
