Detour to Tilicho Lake from Manang

From Manang the trail heads west through the village of Khangsar and an old gompa, then traverses a notorious landslide slope of loose scree above the river, where your guide will want you to move steadily and not stop. Tilicho Base Camp, at around 4,100–4,200 m, has a few lodges in a bleak, impressive valley.

Next morning, start early for the climb of about 800 m in zigzags to the lake. Tilicho Lake, at 4,919 m, is one of the highest large lakes in the world, often frozen at its edges, beneath the ice-covered wall of Tilicho Peak and the Grande Barrière. The scale is hard to take in: the lake stretches for several kilometres.

Return to base camp and continue to Yak Kharka or Shree Kharka to rejoin the main route to Thorong La, adding 2–3 days to the circuit. The altitude and the landslide section make this a serious detour: go only when acclimatised, with a licensed guide, and check trail status in Manang first.

Questions

How high is Tilicho Lake?

Tilicho Lake lies at 4,919 m, beneath Tilicho Peak in Manang district. It is often called one of the highest large lakes in the world. Reaching it requires a climb of about 800 m from Tilicho Base Camp, at around 4,100–4,200 m. Good acclimatisation from a few nights in the Manang valley is essential.

Is the Tilicho Lake trek dangerous?

It has real hazards: a long landslide-prone scree traverse between Khangsar and Tilicho Base Camp, altitude near 5,000 m, cold and changeable weather. With acclimatisation, a licensed guide, an early start and good conditions, most fit trekkers complete it. Check trail status in Manang, as rockfall or snow can close sections.

How many extra days does Tilicho Lake add to the Annapurna Circuit?

Usually 2–3 days. A common plan is Manang to Tilicho Base Camp, then the lake and back to base camp, then a crossing to Yak Kharka or Shree Kharka to rejoin the trail to Thorong La. Some routes are longer. Plan your total days so you are not rushed over Thorong La.
