Dawn climb to the Mardi Himal upper viewpoint
Leave High Camp around 4–5 am and climb the grass and rock ridge by headlamp to the upper viewpoint, around 4,200–4,500 m, for sunrise directly beneath Machhapuchhre's summit, then return for breakfast.

This is the reason for the trek. From High Camp the ridge rises steeply in the dark, a narrow path of grass, dirt and rock with the slopes dropping away on both sides. Walk slowly with your headlamp and your guide's steps in front. As the sky lightens, Machhapuchhre appears, not a distant fishtail now but a vast wall rising above you.
The upper viewpoint, roughly 4,200–4,500 m depending on how far you go, faces Machhapuchhre's south face with Mardi Himal's summit close on the right and Annapurna South and Hiunchuli to the west. At sunrise the snow turns gold, while the Pokhara valley below lies under a sea of cloud. Some walkers continue towards Mardi Himal Base Camp, a longer and higher extension.
Turn back when your guide says: weather on the ridge changes quickly, and wind or snow make the exposed path dangerous. Descending is hard on the knees. Back at High Camp, breakfast and then the long walk down to Low Camp or Siding.

Questions
How high is the Mardi Himal viewpoint?
The upper viewpoint above High Camp is usually quoted at around 4,200–4,500 m, depending on how far up the ridge you go; signs and maps vary. Mardi Himal Base Camp is further and higher. High Camp itself is about 3,580 m. The climb from High Camp to the viewpoint takes 2–3 hours, and return about 2 hours.
Is the Mardi Himal viewpoint dangerous?
The ridge is narrow and exposed, with steep drops, and becomes dangerous in snow, ice or strong wind. In good conditions it is a steady hike without technical climbing. Walk with your guide, use poles, start early and turn back if the weather changes. Altitude above 4,000 m also needs care; descend if symptoms appear.
Can I see Machhapuchhre from Mardi Himal?
Yes, closer than from any other trekking route. From the upper viewpoint Machhapuchhre rises directly above you, showing its south face and twin summit. You also see Mardi Himal, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli. Views are best at sunrise from October to April; cloud usually builds by mid-morning.
