Kathmandu to Rara Lake

There is no direct way to Rara. Fly Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, overnight, then take a small plane to Talcha (Rara Airport) and walk 2–3 hours to the lake. Alternatively fly to Jumla and trek three to four days, or travel two days by rough road via Surkhet to Mugu.

Flights via Nepalgunj and Talcha · 2 days

Fly Kathmandu to Nepalgunj in about an hour and stay the night. Next morning take a small-plane flight to Talcha, Rara Airport in Mugu, then walk two to three hours through forest to the lakeshore. Talcha flights are weather-dependent and not daily in every season, so build in spare days. Baggage limits on the small planes are strict, often 10–15 kg.

Fly to Jumla and trek · 4–5 days

Fly Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and Nepalgunj to Jumla, then trek three to four days to Rara through Khas villages and pine forest, crossing passes over 3,500 m. This is the classic approach and the most rewarding. You need a licensed guide for the national park and usually porters or a mixed teahouse and camping crew.

Road via Surkhet · 2–3 days from Nepalgunj

Jeeps and buses run from Nepalgunj and Surkhet up the Karnali Highway and on to Gamgadhi, the Mugu headquarters, from where it is a few hours to the lake. The road is long, narrow and partly unpaved, with landslides common in the monsoon. It suits travellers with time who want to see the Karnali hills; check current status before you travel.

Worth a stop on the way

  • Nepalgunj
  • Jumla and the Chandannath temple
  • Sinja valley (trek variant)
  • Gamgadhi, Mugu headquarters (road route)

Local tip

Always keep at least one spare day at each end of a Rara trip; mountain flights in Karnali are cancelled often by cloud and wind.
