Getting to Syabrubesi and Machha Khola by road

By Book Nepal Trip Desk

Every trek in Langtang and Manaslu starts with a long drive. Syabrubesi, for Langtang, is about 122 km and 7 to 8 hours north of Kathmandu by jeep. Machha Khola, for Manaslu and Tsum, is 8 to 10 hours west and north via Dhading Besi and Arughat. Private jeeps save time; local buses save money. Here is what to expect.

Why the drive matters

There are no airports in the Langtang or Manaslu trekking regions, so the road is part of the trip. It is also the part most likely to go wrong. Both main routes climb narrow river valleys where landslides, road works and slow trucks are normal, and in the monsoon a single slip can close a road for hours or days. A good driver, an early start and a buffer day at the end of your trek make a bigger difference to your trip than most people expect.

The two key trailheads are Syabrubesi, at 1,460 m on the Bhote Koshi, for the Langtang Valley and Tamang Heritage Trail, and Machha Khola, at about 930 m on the Budhi Gandaki, for the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley. Dhunche, on the road to Syabrubesi, is the usual start for Gosaikunda. Helambu treks start much closer, at Sundarijal on the edge of Kathmandu.

Kathmandu to Syabrubesi and Dhunche

The road leaves Kathmandu to the north-west, climbs over the Kakani ridge with views of Ganesh Himal on clear mornings, and drops to Trishuli Bazaar, also called Bidur, in the Trishuli valley. From there the Pasang Lhamu Highway, named after the first Nepali woman to climb Everest, follows the river north through Betrawati and climbs in long bends to Dhunche, the headquarters of Rasuwa district. Langtang National Park has a checkpost here, where your guide shows your park permit and TIMS card.

Beyond Dhunche the road winds down to Syabrubesi, a roadside town of lodges and shops where the Langtang Khola meets the Bhote Koshi. The highway continues north to the border crossing at Rasuwagadhi, so expect cargo trucks, especially on the upper section. By private jeep the trip takes about 7 to 8 hours; local buses take 8 to 10. Most of the road is paved, but slides and repairs leave rough patches every year.

Kathmandu to Soti Khola and Machha Khola

For Manaslu and Tsum, the route heads west from Kathmandu on the Prithvi Highway, the main road to Pokhara, and turns north into Dhading district to Dhading Besi. From there a road climbs over hills and drops to Arughat on the Budhi Gandaki, the last sizeable bazaar. Beyond Arughat the road follows the river north through Soti Khola to Machha Khola, getting rougher as it goes.

By private jeep, Kathmandu to Machha Khola takes about 8 to 10 hours. Local buses run to Arughat and, in good conditions, on to Soti Khola or Machha Khola, but changing to a local jeep partway is common. The road up the Budhi Gandaki is being extended every dry season, and jeeps now often run above Machha Khola, though landslides frequently cut it. Ask your agency where the road ends this season, because it changes where you sleep on the first night.

Options compared

Prices for private vehicles are per vehicle, one way, and vary with season, fuel prices and road conditions. Bus fares are low but change often; ask at the bus park or your guesthouse. Treat all times as minimums.

Helambu, Nuwakot and the shorter drives

Not every trip here starts with a full day on the road. Helambu and Chisapani walks begin at Sundarijal, about 15 km from Thamel on the north-east edge of the Kathmandu valley, under an hour by car outside rush hour. Local buses run from the Ratna Park area, but a taxi or private car is far easier with packs. At the other end of Helambu, rough roads now climb from Melamchi to Tarkeghyang and Sermathang, so many Helambu treks finish with a jeep back to Kathmandu in about 6 to 7 hours.

Nuwakot, the old palace town above the Trishuli, lies on the same road as Syabrubesi, about 75 km and 3 to 4 hours from Kathmandu over the Kakani ridge. That makes it a natural rest stop before or after a Langtang trek, breaking the long drive into two easier halves. Families often choose this option: one night at Nuwakot, then on to Syabrubesi the next morning fresh.

Tea stops and food on the way

Long drives in Nepal run on tea. On the Syabrubesi road, drivers usually stop for tea at Kakani or Ranipauwa, for lunch around Trishuli or Betrawati, where roadside kitchens serve dal bhat and fresh river fish, and for a last break in Dhunche. On the Manaslu road, Dhading Besi and Arughat are the main meal stops, with simple places serving dal bhat, chow mein and samosas. Bring fruit and snacks from Kathmandu for the stretches in between, and refill your water bottle with treated water where you can rather than buying plastic bottles at every stop.

Leaving the Manaslu Circuit

The Manaslu Circuit ends on the other side of the mountain. After the Larkya La and Bhimthang, you walk down to Dharapani on the Marsyangdi, where the trail meets the Annapurna Circuit road. Shared and private jeeps run from Dharapani down through Tal, Chamje and Syange to Besisahar, the headquarters of Lamjung district, in about 4 to 5 hours. The road is narrow, with long drops to the river, and the ride is bumpy but usually routine for local drivers.

From Besisahar you can go on to Kathmandu, about 6 to 7 hours by car via Dumre and the Prithvi Highway, or to Pokhara in about 4 hours. Many trekkers spend a night in Besisahar to break the journey. If you have time, finishing in Pokhara is pleasant: a lakeside rest after three weeks on the trail, and an easy flight or drive back to Kathmandu afterwards.

Private jeep or local bus

A private jeep costs much more than the bus but buys you control: you leave when you want, stop for photos, toilets and food, and your driver can choose detours around blocked sections. For two to four trekkers with a guide and porters, the cost per person is reasonable, and it is what we include in our trips. Shared jeeps, where each seat is sold separately, are a middle option on some routes, especially from Dharapani.

Local buses are cheap and an experience in themselves: crowded, loud, with music, sacks of rice on the roof and conversations in four languages. They are slower, stop often and leave early, and luggage rides on the roof, so pack your bag in a waterproof cover. If you get motion sick, sit near the front and take tablets before you set off. Whatever you choose, carry water, snacks and some cash for tea stops.

  • Start early: roads are emptier and you arrive before afternoon rain or dust.
  • Keep your passport and permits in your daypack, not on the roof, for checkposts.
  • Allow a buffer day before an international flight after any trek in this region.
  • In the monsoon, expect delays from landslides and carry enough food for a long wait.
  • Check current status of roads before you travel; conditions change every season.

Questions

How long is the drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi?

About 7 to 8 hours by private jeep and 8 to 10 hours by local bus, for a distance of roughly 122 km. The road crosses the Kakani ridge, drops to Trishuli and climbs the Pasang Lhamu Highway via Dhunche. Landslides, road works and trucks heading for the Tibet border can add time, especially in the monsoon.

Where do buses to Syabrubesi leave from in Kathmandu?

Local buses to Syabrubesi and Dhunche usually leave early in the morning from the Machhapokhari and Gongabu bus park area in north-west Kathmandu. Times and boarding points change, so ask your guesthouse or guide the day before and buy tickets in advance in busy seasons. Arrive early to get a seat and space for your bag.

How do I get to Machha Khola for the Manaslu trek?

Drive west from Kathmandu on the Prithvi Highway, turn north into Dhading district to Dhading Besi, continue to Arughat on the Budhi Gandaki and follow the river road via Soti Khola to Machha Khola. It takes about 8 to 10 hours by private jeep. Local buses run to Arughat or Soti Khola, often with a change to a jeep.

Is the road to Syabrubesi dangerous?

It is a mountain road with steep drops, narrow sections and regular landslides, but it is used every day by buses, trucks and jeeps. The main risk is in the monsoon, when slides can block it. Travel with an experienced driver, avoid travelling at night and allow extra time. Check current status before you travel.

Can I fly to the Langtang or Manaslu region?

There are no scheduled flights into the Langtang or Manaslu trekking regions. Every trek starts with a drive. Helicopters can be chartered, for example to Kyanjin Gompa or Samagaon, mainly for evacuations or short trips, but they are expensive and weather dependent. Most trekkers go by road both ways.

How much does a private jeep to Syabrubesi cost?

Prices vary with season, fuel costs and vehicle, but a private jeep from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi typically costs a few hundred US dollars for the return trip, shared among the group. It is included in our trek prices. Shared jeeps and local buses are much cheaper but slower and less flexible.

Where does the Manaslu Circuit trek end?

The Manaslu Circuit ends at Dharapani on the Marsyangdi river, after crossing the Larkya La and descending through Bhimthang and Tilije. From Dharapani a jeep takes about 4 to 5 hours to Besisahar, and from there it is about 6 to 7 hours by road to Kathmandu or about 4 hours to Pokhara.

What checkposts are on the road to Langtang?

The main checkpost is at Dhunche, where Langtang National Park staff check your park permit and TIMS card. Police and army posts along the Pasang Lhamu Highway may also check passports, especially near the Tibet border. Keep your passport, permits and copies in your daypack so you can show them quickly.

Do I need to spend a night in Kathmandu after the trek?

We strongly recommend it. Road delays from landslides, traffic or vehicle trouble are common on the routes from Syabrubesi, Machha Khola and Besisahar. A buffer night in Kathmandu before your international flight removes the risk of missing it, and gives you time for a shower, a meal and souvenir shopping.
