Sunrise on Ama Dablam from Tengboche
Wake before dawn and stand on the meadow in front of Tengboche Monastery as the first sun lights Ama Dablam, Everest and Lhotse. It is one of the classic sights of the Everest trail, and costs nothing but warm clothes and an early alarm.

Ama Dablam, at 6,812 m, is not the highest mountain in view from Tengboche, but it is the one people remember. Its name is usually explained as 'mother's necklace': the long ridges are the mother's arms and the hanging glacier on its face is the dablam, the charm box Sherpa women wear. From Tengboche its spire stands alone across the Imja valley.
At dawn the sequence is precise. First the summit of Everest, peeking over the Nuptse–Lhotse wall to the north, turns pink; then Lhotse; then Ama Dablam's tip catches gold and the light slides down its face. Behind you the monastery's roof glints, prayer flags crack in the wind and monks begin to stir. Twenty minutes later it is full day.
Go out 20–30 minutes before sunrise, roughly 5:30 to 6:30 am depending on the season. In November temperatures at this hour are well below freezing, so wear your down jacket, hat and gloves, and carry tea from the lodge. October to December give the clearest mornings; spring is often hazier but brings the rhododendron in the forest below.

Questions
What does Ama Dablam mean?
Ama means mother and dablam is the charm box Sherpa women wear on a necklace. The long ridges on either side of the summit are seen as a mother's arms, and the hanging glacier on the face as the dablam. The name is usually translated as mother's necklace. The mountain is 6,812 m high.
Can you see Everest from Tengboche?
Yes. Everest's summit appears above the long Nuptse–Lhotse ridge to the north, partly hidden but unmistakable on clear days. Lhotse is more prominent, and Ama Dablam dominates the view to the east. Sunrise and sunset light are best, with October to December mornings the clearest.
How cold is Tengboche at sunrise?
In October, around minus 2 to minus 5 °C at dawn; in November and December, often minus 8 to minus 12 °C, with wind chill on the meadow. Spring mornings are milder. Wear a down jacket, warm hat, gloves and insulated boots. Sun warms the meadow quickly once it clears the ridges.
