Hike down to Rani Mahal through Rani Ban
A day hike from Kailash Nagar near Batase Danda, about 13 km from Tansen, down through Magar villages and the queen's forest to Rani Mahal and the Kali Gandaki, with a jeep back up to Tansen.

We drive from Tansen to Kailash Nagar near Batase Danda, about 13 km, and start walking downhill. The trail passes terraced fields, Magar village houses with slate or tin roofs, and patches of forest, dropping steadily towards the Kali Gandaki.
The last section runs through Rani Ban, the forest Khadga Shumsher named for his queen. You hear the river first, then see glimpses of white through the trees, and then the whole palace on its rock above the water.
After visiting the palace and resting by the river, we take a jeep back up to Tansen, saving the long, hot climb. The descent takes 2–3 hours with stops, and the total day is 7–8 hours.

Questions
How hard is the hike to Rani Mahal?
It is a moderate downhill walk of 2–3 hours, losing several hundred metres of height on village trails and forest paths. The descent is hard on knees, so walking poles help. Because we return by jeep, there is no steep climb back. Anyone who walks regularly can manage it.
Do I need a guide for the Rani Mahal hike?
We recommend one. Trails branch through villages and forest, signage is minimal, and a local guide can find the right path, talk with villagers and arrange the jeep pickup at the river. No permits are needed, as the area is outside national parks and conservation areas.
What should I bring on the Rani Mahal hike?
Bring good walking shoes, 2 litres of water, sun protection, a light rain jacket and snacks. The gorge is much hotter than Tansen, so wear light layers. Carry cash for tea, snacks and the palace entry. Walking poles help on the steep descent.
