Inside the Taj Mahal of Nepal
A guided visit to the restored palace and its small museum, with the story of Khadga Shumsher Rana: palace politics in Kathmandu, exile to Palpa, the Lumbini pillar, a dead queen and a flight to India.

We walk up from the riverbank to the palace terrace, where your guide begins with the man who built it. Khadga Shumsher was one of the most powerful men in Nepal until a failed plot against his brother sent him to the western hills. From Palpa he governed a large part of the country, oversaw the uncovering of the Lumbini inscription and built this palace for his wife.
Inside, the restoration completed after 2017 has brought back the rooms, staircases and courtyards. The museum explains the building and its builder with photographs and objects. Look closely at the plaster mouldings and windows, styles imported from British India into a Nepali gorge.
Then step back out onto the terraces facing the river. From here you understand why he chose this place: rock, water and forest, and no one else in sight.

Questions
Why is Rani Mahal called the Taj Mahal of Nepal?
Like the Taj Mahal in Agra, Rani Mahal was built by a grieving husband in memory of his wife and stands on a riverbank. General Khadga Shumsher Rana built it on the Kali Gandaki from 1893 after his youngest wife Tej Kumari died in 1892. The comparison is about the story, not the architecture.
Is there an entry fee at Rani Mahal?
A small entry fee has been charged since the restoration and opening of the museum, with different rates for Nepalis, SAARC nationals and other foreigners. The amount and opening hours are set locally and may change, so check current status before you travel.
Can I go inside Rani Mahal?
Yes. Since the government restoration from 2017, parts of the palace are open to visitors, with a small museum inside. Some areas may be closed for ongoing work. Follow the caretakers' guidance, and ask before photographing inside the museum rooms.
