Acclimatisation hike up the Thorong La trail
A morning walk from Ranipauwa up the start of the Thorong La trail to about 4,100 m and back, for acclimatisation and views over the Muktinath valley to Dhaulagiri. Useful before Upper Mustang or for trekkers planning to cross the pass from the west.

The old saying among mountaineers is to climb high and sleep low, and this short hike puts it into practice. From Ranipauwa we follow the start of the Thorong La trail east up the open slope above the temple, gaining 300–400 m in about 1.5–2 hours. The path is clear, with prayer flags and cairns marking the way. There is no shade, so start early with a sun hat and plenty of water.
As you climb, the view opens behind you: the temple grove, Ranipauwa and Jharkot below, the Muktinath valley curving down to the Kali Gandaki, and Dhaulagiri and Tukuche Peak to the west. Higher up you may see blue sheep on the slopes and lammergeiers or Himalayan griffons riding the thermals. We turn around at a comfortable point, around 4,000–4,100 m, before the trail continues to Thorong Phedi on the far side.
The walk down takes about an hour. Back in Ranipauwa, rest, eat and drink well; you will sleep better for the exercise. This hike is useful before going into Upper Mustang, where you will sleep at 3,500–3,900 m, or if you plan to cross the Thorong La from Muktinath, the harder direction. It is not suitable for anyone already showing signs of altitude sickness. Turn back at once if you feel dizzy or breathless.

Questions
Can I hike part of the Thorong La trail from Muktinath?
Yes. The trail to the Thorong La starts above the temple, and you can walk up for 1.5–2 hours to about 4,000–4,100 m and return to Ranipauwa the same morning. It is a good acclimatisation hike. Do not continue towards the pass without proper preparation, a guide and an early start; the crossing is a long, high day.
Is it safe to cross Thorong La from Muktinath?
It is possible, but most trekkers cross the other way, from Manang to Muktinath. Crossing from Muktinath means climbing about 1,700 m to the pass (5,416 m) in a day with no good intermediate lodges. We advise it only for well-acclimatised trekkers with a guide. Check current trail status before you travel.
What wildlife can I see above Muktinath?
On the open slopes above Ranipauwa you may see blue sheep (bharal), pikas and marmots in summer, and large birds such as lammergeiers, Himalayan griffons and golden eagles. Snow leopards live in the wider area but are very rarely seen. Early morning is best, when animals are active and the wind is still calm.
