It begins in the circle of pilgrims around Boudhanath and on the wooded hill of Swayambhu, where the valley's Buddhist story starts with a lotus on a lake. A day at Namobuddha adds one of the Jataka tales, of a prince who gave his body to a tigress. Then the plane drops off the edge of the hills to the hot flat Terai. In Lumbini, inside the brick Maya Devi temple, a marker stone shows the spot where tradition places the birth, and outside stands the pillar that the emperor Ashoka raised when he came here as a pilgrim. A day west, among the ruined walls of Tilaurakot, you stand where many believe the young Siddhartha lived before he left home. The journey ends in the hills of Palpa, with Dhaulagiri on the horizon.

The Buddha was born in what is now Nepal, in the garden of Lumbini on the plains near the Indian border, and grew up as a prince of the Shakya clan at Kapilavastu nearby. Centuries later, his teachings returned to the Himalaya by way of India and Tibet and took root in the Kathmandu Valley. This journey follows that thread in reverse, from the living Buddhism of Boudha and Swayambhu to the place where the story began.

You spend three nights near Boudhanath, with a day out to Namobuddha, then fly 35 minutes to Bhairahawa for Lumbini. There are three nights at the Buddha Maya Garden Hotel, close to the Sacred Garden, with a full day for the ancient Shakya sites of Tilaurakot, Kudan, Niglihawa and Gotihawa. Then the road climbs to Tansen for a night of cool air and Himalayan views before you fly back to Kathmandu.

Drive early to Swayambhunath, on its hill west of the city. Drive east out of the valley through Banepa and up a hill road to Namobuddha, at about 1,750 m. Kapilavastu: Tilaurakot and Kudan

Night: Buddha Maya Garden Hotel, Lumbini≈ 30 km · 1 h each way, with short hops between sitesBreakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Drive west to the sites of the Shakya kingdom. At Tilaurakot, brick walls, a moat and gateways lie under old trees; many archaeologists identify it with Kapilavastu, where Siddhartha grew up. Visit the small Kapilavastu Museum nearby. At Kudan, tradition says the Buddha met his father, King Suddhodana, after his enlightenment. At Niglihawa and Gotihawa, Ashoka pillars honour two earlier Buddhas of Buddhist tradition, Kanakamuni and Krakuchhanda. Return to Lumbini for an evening of quiet at the Sacred Garden.

Fly home

Night: Departure from Tribhuvan International Airport≈ 4 km · 20 min to the airportBreakfast

If your flight allows, walk once more around Boudhanath at dawn, then visit Kopan Monastery on its hill to the north, or one of the thangka painting schools in the lanes around the stupa. The airport is only about 20 minutes away by car, so even an early afternoon flight leaves time for a slow morning. Your driver takes you to Tribhuvan International Airport. Allow extra time on busy festival weeks, when the airport road fills early.

Questions

About this trip

Where was the Buddha born?

Buddhist tradition, and the Ashoka pillar inscription found on site, place the Buddha's birth at Lumbini, in the Rupandehi district of southern Nepal, about 22 km from Bhairahawa and near the Indian border. The Maya Devi temple marks the birthplace inside the Sacred Garden. UNESCO listed Lumbini as a World Heritage Site in 1997.

How do I get from Kathmandu to Lumbini?

The easiest way is to fly from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa, about 35 minutes, then drive 22 km to Lumbini, about 40 minutes. By road, Kathmandu to Lumbini is about 280 km and takes 8–10 hours. Tourist buses run daily. On this journey we fly both ways and use the road only between Lumbini and Tansen.

How many days do I need in Lumbini?

Two full days is a good minimum: one for the Sacred Garden, the Maya Devi temple and the monastic zone, one for the Kapilavastu sites of Tilaurakot, Kudan, Niglihawa and Gotihawa. Add a day for Ramagrama and Devdaha, or for meditation in one of the monasteries. Three nights, as on this journey, allows a calm pace.

What is Tilaurakot?

Tilaurakot is an archaeological site about 27 km west of Lumbini, with the brick foundations of a walled city, gateways and a moat. Many archaeologists identify it with Kapilavastu, the capital of the Shakya kingdom, where Siddhartha Gautama lived as a prince before leaving home. Excavations are still under way, and a small museum nearby shows finds from the area.

When is the best time to visit Lumbini?

October to March is the most comfortable, with warm days and cool nights. December and January can bring thick morning fog and cold. April to June is very hot, often above 35 °C, and July to September is the monsoon. Buddha Jayanti, in April or May, is crowded but special for pilgrims who want to see the celebrations.

Can I meditate in Lumbini?

Yes. Several monasteries in the monastic zone welcome visitors to sit during prayers, and some run meditation sessions or retreats, including Vipassana courses at a centre in the zone. Sessions and courses must be arranged in advance and follow their own schedules. We can leave a free morning or extend your stay for a retreat.

What is the dress code at the Maya Devi temple?

Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and remove shoes and hats before entering. Inside, walk quietly along the raised walkway, keep your voice low and follow signs about photography near the marker stone. Light colours are comfortable in the heat. Pilgrims often bring flowers or incense to offer, which you are welcome to do.

Why include Tansen on a Lumbini pilgrimage?

Tansen breaks the heat of the plains with a night in the hills at about 1,350 m, and it is only about three hours from Lumbini. The old town has Newar houses, temples and dhaka weavers, and Srinagar hill above it gives a sunrise view of Dhaulagiri and the Annapurnas. It also makes a natural link if you want to continue to Pokhara.

Is this pilgrimage suitable for older travellers?

Yes. The walking is easy and flat at Lumbini and Kapilavastu, with bicycle-rickshaws or cars available between monasteries. The highest point, Namobuddha at about 1,750 m, has a short stepped path. We use good hotels, plan rest in the hottest hours and keep the domestic flights early or mid-morning when weather is most reliable.
