On day one the land is flat and hot, the villages are Tharu and Madhesi, and the sound in the Sacred Garden is chanting in Pali, Tibetan and Korean. On day three the road leaves Butwal and the Tinau gorge closes in; within an hour you are among pines and Magar villages, and the air smells of woodsmoke. Tansen is a hill town of traders, weavers and metalworkers. On day four you cross the Kali Gandaki at Ramdi, a river that rises beyond the Himalaya in Mustang, then climb through Syangja's terraces until, near Pokhara, Machhapuchhre appears over the ridge. You have gone from the Buddha's birthplace to the snows in a week.

The Siddhartha Highway is named after the prince who was born at its southern end. It runs from the Indian border at Belahiya through Bhairahawa and Butwal, climbs to Tansen, crosses the Kali Gandaki and ends in Pokhara, about 180 km of road that takes you from 100 m to 800 m and from rice paddies to the foot of the Annapurnas. Most people fly over it. We drive it, slowly, with a night in the middle.

You start in Lumbini with two nights for the Sacred Garden and the monastic zones. Tansen gives you an evening in steep Newar lanes and a dawn on the ridge. Pokhara gives you the mountains: Machhapuchhre reflected in Phewa Lake, sunrise from Sarangkot and the white Peace Pagoda above the water. It is an easy, varied first week in Nepal and a good way to see how the country is stacked.

Highlights

  • Two unhurried days in Lumbini, including dawn chanting in the Sacred Garden

  • The Siddhartha Highway across the Kali Gandaki, with stops for tea and views
  • Sunrise from Sarangkot over Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Machhapuchhre
  • A rowing boat on Phewa Lake and the walk up to Pokhara's World Peace Pagoda

After breakfast, take a rowing boat across Phewa Lake, stopping at the island temple of Tal Barahi, and walk up through forest to the World Peace Pagoda, built by Nipponzan Myohoji, the same Japanese order behind Lumbini's pagoda. Questions

About this trip

How long is the drive from Lumbini to Pokhara?

About 180 km along the Siddhartha Highway, usually 7–8 hours of driving without stops. We break it with a night in Tansen, so neither day is long: about 3 hours from Lumbini to Tansen, and 5–6 hours from Tansen to Pokhara with tea and view stops. Road works and monsoon landslides can add time.

Why stop in Tansen instead of driving straight through?

Tansen sits almost exactly halfway and is worth a night on its own merits: an old hill capital with Newar lanes, the Amar Narayan temple, dhaka weavers and karuwa makers, and a ridge with Himalayan views. Breaking the drive there also makes the trip far more comfortable, especially for families and older travellers.

Can I fly instead of drive between Lumbini and Pokhara?

There are no regular direct flights between Bhairahawa and Pokhara; you would fly via Kathmandu, which takes most of a day anyway. The drive is the better choice. It shows you the change from the plains to the hills and the Kali Gandaki valley, and stops in Tansen.

Will I see the mountains from Pokhara?

On most mornings from October to April, yes. Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South and the Annapurna range stand directly north of Phewa Lake, and Sarangkot adds Dhaulagiri to the west. From June to September clouds usually hide them, though early mornings sometimes clear. Spring haze can soften views from late March.

Is this trip suitable for children?

Yes. The flying is short, the drives are broken up and the activities are gentle: cycling in Lumbini, walking in Tansen, boats and short hikes in Pokhara. Children usually love the monasteries' colours and prayer wheels, the Phewa Lake boats and the early start for Sarangkot. We can add a child seat to the car on request.

What is the Siddhartha Highway?

It is the road that runs north from the Indian border at Belahiya through Bhairahawa, Butwal and Tansen to Pokhara, named after Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, who was born near its southern end. It was built in the 1960s and 1970s with Indian assistance and is still the main road link between Lumbini and Pokhara.

Where do we stay in Pokhara?

At Temple Tree Resort and Spa in Lakeside, a short walk from Phewa Lake, with stone-and-wood buildings around a garden and pool. Lakeside is where the cafés and boat jetties are, and it is the easiest base for Sarangkot and the Peace Pagoda. We can upgrade to Fish Tail Lodge or The Pavilions Himalayas on request.

Can I add a short trek from Pokhara?

Yes. Two or three extra nights let you add an easy trek, such as Dhampus and the Australian Camp ridge or a walk up to Panchase. Since April 2023 foreign trekkers in conservation areas need a licensed guide; you already have one with us. Check current status before you travel, and ask us for a re-quote.

What is the best time of year for this route?

October to March is ideal: comfortable heat in Lumbini, cool clear days in Tansen and Pokhara, and the best mountain views in October and November. April is still good but hot on the plains. From May to September Lumbini is very hot and the monsoon brings rain and possible road delays.
