From the hotel area, we follow a path into pine forest on the ridge, soft with needles underfoot. Birds call from the trees, and clearings open to views over the valleys on either side. The walking is easy, with gentle ups and downs, and suitable for most fitness levels.

After about an hour we come down into a Tamang village of scattered houses and terraced fields. Families grow maize, millet, potatoes and vegetables, and keep goats, chickens and buffalo. With your guide's help, we stop at a farmhouse for tea, and talk about how farming, schooling and work have changed.

We continue through fields and another small settlement, then loop back up to the ridge through forest. In spring, rhododendrons flower in patches; in autumn, the terraces are golden with ripening millet. We return to the hotel in time for lunch or sunset.

Questions

Are there easy walks around Nagarkot?

Yes. Many gentle trails run along the ridge through pine forest and down to nearby villages, from one to three hours. Paths are mostly earth and stone with gentle gradients. A guide helps you find the best loops and introduces you to villagers.

Who are the Tamang people?

The Tamang are one of Nepal's larger ethnic groups, a Tibeto-Burman people who live mainly in the hills around the Kathmandu Valley. They have their own language and are mostly Buddhist. Around Nagarkot, many are farmers, and others work in tourism, transport and construction.

Can I visit a village home near Nagarkot?

Yes, with a guide who knows the families. We stop for tea in a farmhouse where hosts are happy to receive visitors. Be polite, remove shoes if asked, accept tea with your right hand, and ask before taking photographs of people or their homes.
